Alien Technology® Announces Election of Bob L. Martin, Retired Wal-Mart Information Technology Innovator, to Board of Directors
August 25, 2005, Morgan Hill, CA — Alien Technology today announced the election of Bob L. Martin to the Board of Directors. Mr. Martin, a retired Wal-Mart executive and member of the Wal-Mart Executive Committee from 1985 to1999, is widely recognized for his leadership role in bringing innovative information technology to the retail segment.

Until his retirement in 1999, Mr. Martin was President and CEO Wal-Mart International. Previously, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Mr. Martin has received the International Mass Retailers Partnership Award, recognition by Carnegie Mellon University and American Management Systems for achievement in Information Technology Management, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from VICS for the development of industry standards between retailers and manufacturers. He was inducted into the CIO Hall of Fame and recognized as one of the most influential CIO's of the decade (1990's). In 1999, the University of Vienna awarded Mr. Martin its Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions in International Retail Management. In 2001, the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of Automation recognized Mr. Martin among a select group of industry leaders in the development of barcode technology.
Mr. Martin is a member of the Council of the Americas and serves on the Board of Directors of Gap, Inc.; Sabre Holdings, Inc.; Furniture Brands International; Edgewater Technology; and Conn's Incorporated. In addition, he serves on several non-profit Board of Directors including Students in Free Enterprise, Santa Clara University (School of Retailing), and the Rafiki Foundation.
Mr. Martin studied at South Texas University, and received an Honorary Doctorate from Southwest Baptist University in 1990.
