Alien Technology Corporation Successfully Completes RFID trial at Memphis Medical Center
Morgan Hill, C - April 5, 2004 - Alien Technology Corporation, a leading provider of reliable, high-volume Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) products, announced today the successful completion of a trial to ascertain the feasibility of using RFID to track trauma patients as they move through the trauma care process at the Trauma Emergency Department at the Shelby County Regional Medical Center (the "MED") in Memphis.
The trial, funded by a grant from the Robert Woods Johnson foundation to a multidisciplinary research team at the University of Memphis's FedEx Center for Supply Chain Management, monitored patients in the trauma center to determine how long they were at each location in the facility. Patients were informed of the purpose and nature of the trial, and were enthusiastic to participate in improving the MED's processes and services. The RFID implementation was designed and installed by idensys Incorporated, a leading RFID system integrator (formerly American Project Services), using Alien Technology 's 2450MHz battery powered system. "We selected the Alien solution for this trial because of the robust tags as well as total system performance. The system was unobtrusive to the patients and easy to install and use," said Andy Willis, President of idensys.
The data from the trial will be used to analyze different trauma scenarios and create benchmarks for high-occurrence trauma events. This data will help the MED better plan for future events as well as improve the patient's experience through the center. Dr. Brian Janz, team leader for the FedEx Center's research team commented, " Through the trial we were able to prove RFID could be used to track patients along the line of service in the center. We can now look forward to future research efforts aimed at using this data to better utilize hospital resources and in turn better serve the MED's patients."
"We are very pleased to have worked with Dr. Janz's team and idensys on this important project. The Alien 2450MHz battery powered system is well-suited for applications like the MED installation and we are happy with its performance during the trial," said Tom Pounds, Vice President of Corporate Development and Product Strategy for Alien Technology. This system is a unique product that fills a gap between Alien's ultra-low cost passive RFID systems and expensive active tag systems. The 2450 Battery system adds a battery to a traditional backscatter RFID tag to enable longer read range and the ability to incorporate sensors in the tags to track time, temperature and other metrics.
