George W. Everhart
Chief Executive Officer, Alien Technology Corporation
George W. Everhart joined Alien in January 2007. Mr. Everhart has over 25 years of executive leadership experience with specific expertise in leading high growth phases of industry leading technology companies. Everhart has held CEO and sales and marketing executive positions with both small startup companies in emerging markets, and large multinational companies, experiencing a rapid pace of growth. He has extensive experience in global markets as well as the domestic U.S. market.
Everhart recently held CEO positions with early stage startup companies, SealedMedia and Onesecure, where he led successful company funding and expansion and established both companies as recognized leaders in their markets. Previously, Everhart was Sr.VP, Worldwide Sales & Service for 3COM Corporation, managing the Americas, Asia/Pacific, and EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa) business activities as well as the 1,000 person global service organization. Prior, Everhart was President & CEO, Fujitsu PC Corporation, where he led the company’s market entry and rapid growth in the notebook PC business. Everhart also held a series of executive leadership positions with Apple Computer during the company’s fast growth years, 1987-1996, including VP US Sales, VP & GM PC Business Division, and VP Business & Government Sales. Everhart’s early career included marketing, sales, and business management positions with The Braegen Corporation and Memorex Corporation.
Mr. Everhart has been active in industry, government, and education associations as well holding both board and advisory positions. He was a member of the “Highway One Committee” to assist in the automation of Congress. He currently is a member of the Board of Fellows at Santa Clara University.
Mr. Everhart holds a Bachelors degree in Psychology, and a Masters degree in Business Administration from Santa Clara University.
Charles G. Alvarez
Chief Financial Officer
Charles G. Alvarez has served as our vice president of finance and chief financial officer since June 2008. Prior to joining us, Mr. Alvarez was executive vice president, finance, and chief financial officer for 2Wire, a provider of broadband solutions for the residential market, from April 2007 to December 2007. From June 1998 to July 2005, Mr. Alvarez was senior vice president, finance and administration, and chief financial officer for Verisity, Ltd., a provider of verification process automation solutions. From March 1997 to May 1998, Mr. Alvarez was vice president, finance and administration, and chief financial officer for Alliance Semiconductor, a semiconductor company. He also held a series of executive leadership positions with LSI Logic and General Electric Company. Mr. Alvarez holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in business and economics from San Francisco State University , and graduated from the Executive Financial Management Program at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business and Executive Management Program at the UC Berkeley Haas Graduate School of Business.
Dr. John Stephen Smith
Chief Technology Officer, Founder
Dr. Stephen Smith founded Alien Technology in December 1994 and served as the company's CEO until early 1997. He served as a director and consultant to the company through 2004 and recently returned to his position as chief technology officer. As CTO, Dr. Smith leads Alien's advanced engineering and R&D efforts.
Dr. Smith is a professor of electrical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, currently on leave. He is the author of more than 85 refereed technical papers, and holds 15 issued patents. A recognized pioneer in RFID technologies, Dr. Smith is the inventor of the patented Fluidic Self Assembly process that is the basis of Alien's high volume tag manufacturing process. He also invented the Q protocol and was the primary driver of many other technical innovations that rest at the core of EPC Global's Generation 2 UHF specification.
Dr. Smith was a Hertz fellow, and recipient of the Presidential Young Investigator award. He received his PhD, MS and BS degrees all in Applied Physics from the California Institute of Technology.
Patrick Ervin
Vice President of World Wide Sales
Patrick Ervin leads the Alien Technology sales team for North and South America, and Europe, including all direct and channel related sales efforts. He joined Alien in 2005 as VP of Business Development for the Retail and CPG industries, and assumed responsibility for Sales in 2006. Mr. Ervin is a Retail industry expert, with 25+ years experience in sales, marketing, and product management roles focused on delivering technology solutions to large retail chains, including senior leadership roles at Retalix, IBM, and Lyceum Interactive. At Retalix, as Executive VP of Sales and Marketing, He was instrumental in driving year to year revenue growth of more than 30% between 2003 and 2005. At IBM, he excelled in various leadership positions in sales, channels, and product management between 1986 and 2001.
David A. Aaron
Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary
David Aaron joined Alien Technology in 2003 as Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary. He is responsible for all legal aspects of the company.
Prior to joining Alien Technology, Mr. Aaron was Senior Counsel for Sun Microsystems, providing legal support for several product groups including the Networking and Security, Telecommunications Software and Server Appliance (formerly Cobalt Networks) business units. Before its being successfully acquired by Sun Microsystems for $2 billion stock-for-stock transaction, Mr. Aaron was the sole in-house counsel for Cobalt Networks, a Nasdaq traded manufacturer of Linux based server appliances and data storage devices. Mr. Aaron was also Associate Corporate Counsel at transportation provider Emery Worldwide, a subsidiary of CNF Inc., and spent several years in private practice.
Mr. Aaron received his Juris Doctor and a Bachelor of Science in Commerce, with an emphasis in Finance, from Santa Clara University.
Curt Carrender
Vice President, Engineering Systems
Curt Carrender is responsible for all aspects of RFID hardware design, development, and testing at Alien. He has 12 years of diverse experience in RFID systems development, design, and implementation. From 1998 to 2001, Mr. Carrender was a staff scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Lab, where he led numerous RFID projects for government clients, ranging in scope from system integration to custom design & development. His innovative work led to the filing of 44 invention reports and 8 patent applications, and ultimately the start-up of a new venture, WaveID. WaveID merged with Alien in 2001.
From 1991 to 1994, Mr. Carrender was director of Tag Development at Amtech Systems in Albuquerque, NM. Following the acquisition of Amtech by Intermec, Mr. Carrender was Director of R&D for the Amtech System Division of Intermec Technologies. An expert in high-frequency RFID systems in particular, Mr. Carrender has previously developed a series of spread-spectrum frequency hopping readers at 915MHz, 2.45GHz, and 5.8GHz, and associated beam-powered tags using a new ASIC, protocol, and format.
Mr. Carrender is named on 17 patents, with 11 more pending approval. He received a BS in Electrical & Computer Engineering from Kansas State University.
Natalino Camilleri
Vice President, IC Engineering
Dr. Natalino Camilleri is responsible for overseeing integrated circuit development programs at Alien Technology. He joined Alien in October 2005 and brings over 20 years of experience in the development and creation of RF systems and RF/mixed-mode integrated circuits.
Prior to Alien, Dr. Camilleri held several executive and engineering management positions in the wireless semiconductor sector. He was a Director of Engineering at MicroLinear, VP of RF Engineering at Pacific Consultants, President of the RF subsidiary for DSPG, Radio Product Line Manager at Advanced Micro Devices, and the Silicon RF Technology Manager at Motorola.
During his career he was able to take early product ideas and develop award-winning products, such as a chip set for Spread Spectrum Cordless Phones, Wireless LANs and GSM phones. In the technology sector he developed leading edge circuits for new technologies such as SiGe, BiCMOS, LDMOS, and CMOS. He was instrumental in developing the LDMOS discrete and IC technology for Motorola. Earlier in his career, Dr. Camilleri excelled as an individual contributor at Motorola, HP-Avantek and Texas Instruments and published more than 50 papers on RF design and technology. Dr. Camilleri is active within IEEE and is one of the key organizers for the RFIC Symposium.
Dr. Camilleri received his BSEE from the University of Malta and his MSEE and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin.
